Abstract

Consumer trust is a crucial requirement for the success of online systems, particularly in environments characterized by high digital interactivity, data sharing, and algorithmic decision-making. This study explores the socio-technical determinants that shape the formation, maintenance, and erosion of consumer trust in online platforms. Using an integrative literature synthesis combined with a socio-technical systems lens, the paper identifies key human-centric, social, cultural, and technological factors influencing trust. The analysis demonstrates that consumer trust is a multidimensional construct shaped not only by privacy and security mechanisms but also by usability, social influence, perceived fairness, and transparency of digital systems. A conceptual model is proposed to guide future empirical work.
